The National Board of Review went its own way Wednesday, naming “Her” as Best Picture and feting its helmer Spike Jonze as well. (See the full list of winners here.)
On Tuesday, the New York Film Critics Circle had gone with “American Hustle” for Best Picture over current Oscar frontrunner “12 Years a Slave.” The NBR snubbed “American Hustle” entirely while “12 Years” earned only a mention on its Top 10 list.

At the NBR, “Nebraska” won both male acting awards — lead Bruce Dern and supporting player Will Forte.
Emma Thompson claimed Best Actress for “Saving Mr. Banks” while Octavia Spencer took the supporting prize for “Fruitvale Station” which also won breakthrough awards for star Michael B. Jordan and helmer Ryan Coogler.
The Coens won the original screenplay prize for “Inside Llewyn Davis” while Emmy champ Terence Winter (“The Sorpranos”) won the adapted award for “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
All of these films featured on the list of Best Picture nominees, as did “Lone Survivor,” “Prisoners” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
“The Wind Rises” won Best Animated Feature as it had at the NYFCC and “Stories We Tell” repeated as Best Documentary.
“The Past” picked up the Foreign Language Film award.

Stopping to chastise the enthusiastic audience in the front row at the midway point for not letting her know her bra strap was visible in her chic black dress, Thompson said she was doing her hardest to entertain in spite of the fashion social faux pas.
Thompson, who won her first Oscar just after a Golden Globe in 1993 for her turn in Howards End, described that win as a “totally surreal” experience. She said that back in the early 1990s, the Academy awards were a “very faraway thing” and that the Oscar statue was an icon “that belonged to Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn,” not her.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson revealed she would have jumped at the chance to play the Doctor in the long-running BBC series.

On tonight’s The Graham Norton Show, Thompson denied speculation that she was offered the role that was given to The Thick of It actor Peter Capaldi.

Appearing alongside Matt Smith and David Tennant, she said: “I would have said yes, I’d have loved to have played Doctor Who.

“Maybe women need their own kind of new time travelling person?”

On the upcoming 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor, the tenth Doctor David Tennant and eleventh Time Lord Matt Smith remained tight-lipped about the plot.

They only revealed that Capaldi, who is set to play the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor, will not be in tomorrow’s episode.

According to Matt: “Peter joins at Christmas.”

David also added that he didn’t need any persuading to appear in the special.

The 29th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival will fete Emma Thompson with the Modern Master Award.

The British thesp-scribe-producer will receive the fest’s highest honor for her diverse body of work, which includes, most recently, her take as P.L. Travers — the author of the “Mary Poppins” novels — in John Lee Hancock’s “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Thompson nabbed the best actress Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for one of her first major roles, her portrayal of Margaret Schlegel in 1992’s “Howard’s End.” The triple threat also scored an Oscar in 1995 for her adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility.”

“With the distinction of being the only artist to win an Oscar for both Best Actress and Best Screenplay, Ms. Thompson exemplifies the spirit of the Modern Master,” SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said in a press release.

Past Modern Master honorees include Ben Affleck, Christopher Nolan, Sean Penn, Peter Jackson, Clint Eastwood and James Cameron.

The tribute will take place on Feb. 8 at Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theatre on the eve of the festival’s end. SBIFF runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 9.

Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson will be honored with a handprint-footprint ceremony at the Opening Night Gala of AFI Fest 2013 presented by Audi, featuring Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” in which Thompson stars as “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers, on Thursday, November 7th at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Inspired by true events, “Saving Mr. Banks” is the extraordinary, untold story of how Walt Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen and also stars Tom Hanks, Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, Bradley Whitford, Annie Rose Buckley, Ruth Wilson, B.J. Novak, Rachel Griffiths, Kathy Baker and Colin Farrell.

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise-one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

Actress Emma Thompson says dancing with Prince Charles is “better than sex.”

Thompson makes the comment in a Time magazine feature on the 64-year-old heir to the British throne.

Charles tells the magazine he has had a lifelong desire to “heal and make things better.”

The prince, who backs a host of charitable and environmental causes, said he feels it is his “duty to worry about everybody and their lives in this country, to try to find a way of improving things if I possibly can.”

He also reveals that he recently staged a rehearsal to help teach his son, Prince William, how to host an investiture ceremony in which Britons receive knighthoods and other honors.

William presided over his first investiture at Buckingham Palace last week without any problems.
